What happened to ‘Aqua’

In 2000 even I a then 10 year boy wanted a hook in the barbie world intrigued by its liberating ‘kiss me anywhere’ attitude to sex. It was a song that acknowledged the barbie as a voodoo doll whose ‘plastic’ propelled the 20th century deeper in to superfical obsession. However the song did what every was scared to and acknowledged this as ‘fantastic’. It unashamedly celebrated the desire to fit the perfect proportions and the carefree liberation success that lay at this end.

‘Aqua’ – teen pop sensation, mordant social commentators – The group sold an estimated 33 million albums and singles, making them the most successful Danish band ever.

But what happened to these Water Coolers as they were known in the height of their hipness?

The band fell apart merely a year after the release of ‘barbie girl’. thsi was principly due to sexual infidelity that was so celebrated in the song. Lene, Rene and Soren became intangled in a love triangle that left them with irreperable differences.

This is the sad reality that whilst some try and celebrate ‘barbie world’ the constraints of society make this an impossibilty even for them. Barbie sales are down, Aqua has dibanded and Jessica Sismson has just had fat picture published. This is not fantastic.
