What is a Self Directed IRA

November 30th, 2009

A self directed Ira is a retirement plan that allows the owner of the account to make his own decisions and investments. It is an account that is required by the IRS  to have someone other than the account holder to maintain it. That person is called a trustee or a custodian and their primary role is to take care of all transactions and record keeping that pertains to any assets, to help the account holder to understand and follow the rules that pertain to prohibited assets. The custodian also helps the account holder to invest in all permitted IRS investments.  This may include such investments as real estate, franchises or tax liens. .
