Do not react emotionally to emotional outbursts

If you are having trouble staying calm, temporarily leave the room. You should acknowledge the outburst with active listening , but you should not react emotionally yourself, as that will likely escalate the emotions and the conflict as a whole. Do not react emotionally to emotional outbursts. These emotions often mask the substantive issues in dispute. The challenge is how to use the energy in a constructive way. Yet we still sometimes feel the same anger management tips urges, such as the urge to completely destroy our attacker. But we are not often in life and death situations anymore. In a life or death situation, this could prove to make the critical difference.
