Nothing Humorous About Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

September 13th, 2009

Many of us have heard the jokes and seen the movies about prostate problems, but the situation is not really humorous at all. As a man ages, his prostate enlarges which is a natural part of aging, but when urine flow becomes restricted, bladder infections ensue, and a sense of urgency rules the days and nights, it is time to see a urologist to determine a diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Often, medication is all that is needed such as the alpha blockers and 5a-reductase inhibitors which help to restore smooth muscle strength and normal urine output. Usually, the physician will want fluids restricted at bedtime, especially caffeine and alcohol. In extreme cases where the urine flow is blocked completely, surgery is necessary to prevent further damage to the bladder and urethra.
