Surrounding the urethra and sitting just underneath the bladder the prostate is the source of nutrients and fluid to the male sperm.   Over time exposure to male hormones can, in many men, cause the prostate to grow and to become cancerous.  Men face an estimated lifetime risk of developing cancer of the prostate equal to 1 in 6.  By undergoing regular screening tests most men will detect the cancer while it is in its early stages.  Early detection dramatically increases the likelihood that the cancer can be eliminated with proper treatment.  When the prostate cancer metastasizes it is no longer curable.
