I Am considering Using MLM Leads

I am starting a new home based business with a friend of mine. We have never done this before, but lost our jobs to the bad economy and can’t get new ones. We went to a seminar on starting a home based business and read the recommended books on home based businesses. One of the books mentioned buying leads to help build a customer base for our product. We are considering purchasing leads from mlm leads. We don’t know how to choose the right package of leads. which leads are the best for new businesses? What price should we be willing to pay for phone generated leads?
