Promotional Products for Non Profits?

Can a non profit organization use promotional products? It seems like it might be great idea to get the name out there and let people know about the specifics of what we do, but I wasn’t sure if this would be worth the cost. We have so many events and I think these types of things would be dispersed quickly to all of the participants, but I don’t know if it would give us the results that we are looking for. Does anyone have any type of experience in this area? I am planning to meet with a friend to discuss some of our options.
